REVIEW – Toki Tori 2+ (Switch)

Toki Tori 2+ is the follow-up to the original Toki Tori, which was released in 2001. Many things have changed this time around, though. On top of that, this is the “Plus” version on Nintendo Switch, which contains even more features. So, it seems like there should be plenty of game here, but is there enough to warrant your hard-earned cash?

Like before, you control Toki Tori, a little yellow chicken. This time, you find out he has received a telepathic message from five ancient frogs that has provoked him to embark on a journey to destroy a floating crystal that has basically endangered everything in his world. The only problem is that this chicken cannot jump or fly, and he has a ton of obstacles and enemies to avoid while traversing the enthralling forest island.

At its core, this is a side-scrolling puzzle game with an open world concept. Along the way, you must figure out how to complete each puzzle on your own, as you very rarely get any hints. This can make the game both frustrating but also incredibly fulfilling. Even though it was not always clear what I needed to do, I felt very satisfied when I figured it out and was able to move on to the next puzzle.

In his past outing, Toki Tori could use items, but this time, they have been replaced with two skills. Stomping will scare creatures away but will also break through some parts of a level. Using his whistle, he can cause creatures to move closer to him. He can also whistle specific songs, combining both short and long notes, to perform various actions in the game, such as rewind and fast travel. Toki Tori can also perform other feats; for example, if he enters water, his feathers will become wet and stomping allows him to splash the water.

Speaking of water, it looks great dripping off of Toki Tori. In fact, the entire game looks great. The graphics are crisp high definition, and it runs at an incredibly smooth 60 frames-per-second. Seriously, this game is just as beautiful as it is cute and challenging. On top of that, it has a fun soundtrack that never feels repetitive or annoying. Instead, it draws you into the world. On Switch, you can even turn on the HD Rumble feature to pull you in the game even more, enabling you to feel stomps, hits, and more.

After you make your way through the large open world to solve enough puzzles and save the island, there is still more to do. For instance, you can stray off the main path and complete even more difficult puzzles. You can also go searching for the 100s of golden wings or try to get photos of all the creatures in the game. If you’re into achievements, there are a ton just waiting for you to complete.

If you haven’t noticed, I am a big fan of Toki Tori 2+. The original was a solid puzzle adventure, but this sequel is even better. Not only is it fun, difficult, and beautiful, this particular version contains even more features and challenges that will keep you coming back far after you complete the main game. On top of all that, with Nintendo Switch, you can take it on the go to play anytime. So, stop reading this review, and go grab Toki Tori 2+ from the Nintendo eShop today!
