Being new to writing reviews, I’ve had to learn new concepts that others may have taken for granted. One lesson has been that often it can be difficult to distinguish between a game that doesn’t appeal to me as the player and one that’s truly bad. Luckily, this was not the case for Yet Another Zombie Defense HD, a great game from Awesome Games Studio.
While I, personally, am not a huge fan of the type of real-time defense games that Zombie Defense comes from, it’s very clear that the game is well designed. Starting with a pistol containing infinite ammo, you clear the first wave, collect money and resources used to build up defenses between waves, and move into the next night to repeat the process over. This is an incredibly satisfying gameplay loop that can continue so long as the player’s skill allows it, to which a game of this type should aspire.
Each type of available defense and weapon has a clear function and can be made use of through multiple strategies of defense to varying degrees of success. The methods of survival are functionally infinite, although not every strategy is going to be successful. The freedom of choice that each player is allowed is appreciable and allows for many players to be equally successful for different reasons.
The UI of Zombie Defense is simple and easy to learn, although not necessarily intuitive. I recall having difficulty remembering which button purchases items and which one places them, however given more time I likely would have been able to adapt. One glaring issue, unfortunately, is that the defense items cannot be rotated. Barricades and every other item are only ever orientated in one direction, which limits the aforementioned freedom of construction, although not appreciably.
Ultimately the appeal of Yet Another Zombie Defense HD will come down to taste rather than quality. While I will not continue to play, if someone enjoys this genre I’d certainly recommend they give the game a shot- especially at the $4.99 USD price point.
