For the first time in awhile, the Nintendo Switch was NOT the best selling platform of a month.
The NPD reports that the PS5 was the best-selling platform for the month of August in terms of both unit and dollar sales. Prior to this month, it was common for Switch to take first place in unit sales while PS5 mostly dominated dollar sales. Overall, Nintendo still leads the market in unit sales for the year. Interestingly, Matt Piscatella of NPD notes that both PS5 and Xbox Series experienced double-digit percentage growth during the month when compared to a year ago.
For software, Madden NFL 23 took the #1 spot in the Top 20 best-selling games for the month. Only five Nintendo-published games were able to chart: Mario Kart 8 DX is at #6, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 at #10, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at #16, Kirby & The Forgotten Land at #18, and Pokémon Legends: Arceus at #20. Third-party Switch software includes: Minecraft at #7, Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga at #8, MLB: The Show 22 at #9, Digimon Survive at #11, and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim at #19.
