The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild to have Expansion DLC

Earlier this morning, Nintendo announced that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will jump onto the downloadable content train when it launches on March 3, 2017. The DLC will only be available as one large purchase, however, which grants you access to three treasure chests right away. Among these chests located in the Great Plain, you will find a Nintendo Switch shirt.

In the summer, the next pack will arrive with a Cave of Trials challenge, Hard Mode, and a new in-game map feature. Further down the line, around Holiday 2017, another pack will launch containing new challenges, a new dungeon, and a new story.

The cost for the DLC Expansion Pass is $19.99. As was stated earlier, you will not be able to purchase these packs separately.

Here is a quick video from Eiji Aonuma explaining the DLC. Feel free to watch it before jumping down to my thoughts about all this.

I don’t yet know how I feel about this announcement. Part of me thinks it is great that Nintendo is heading into the DLC market, so they can keep players coming back to a game over time. However, does that mean the original game isn’t that great, so DLC is needed? Or is this DLC stuff that should be in the original game, but they’ve left it out on purpose to either get the game out earlier or to make more money down the line?

It does bug me that, if I get it, I’ll be spending $120 (since I got the special edition) on this game. Granted, Zelda games are often worth every penny I pay, but that’s still a lot of money. It’s almost half as much as the Nintendo Switch alone.

On top of this, what additional story is coming in the holiday pack? And what will that do to the main storyline? Will it be something extra like Hyrule Warriors, or will it be something that directly impacts the overall timeline? And with the inclusion of a Nintendo Switch shirt, does Nintendo exist in the world of Zelda? My mind is going nuts just thinking of the possibilities!

So, what do you think of this planned DLC for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild? Are you excited? Do you think Zelda should not have DLC? Will you purchase it? Let us know in the comments below!
