Everyone is talking about it. Where is that January 2019 Nintendo Direct!? As we discussed in our last podcast, we are not sure it is even going to happen. And with the recent press release news and the Indie Highlights that dropped today, it seems our suspicions are correct. Nonetheless, we still received some cool news about upcoming indie games on Nintendo Switch via a Nintendo UK highlight reel and a Nintendo of America press release.
Instead of creating their own video, the American division of Nintendo simply pointed to the UK video and highlighted two games that will release on February 1. Image & Form’s next adventure, SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech, is a team-based RPG focused heavily on a card-collecting mechanic that will come first to Nintendo Switch. Chucklefish, meanwhile, will also launch their turn-based four-player online/local strategy game, Wargroove, the same day.
While the video did not mention Mages of Mystralia, Dragon Marked for Death, AWAY: Journey to the Unexpected, or Treasure Stack, Nintendo of America did not want you to forget about them. They are all coming out between January 29 and March 1 (exact dates below).
A few other games mentioned in the highlight reel did not have exact release dates, but did seem very interesting. Double Kick Heroes is a rhythm-based shooter with a heavy metal soundtrack and Joy-Con motion controls that will release in summer 2019. Forager, which is “coming soon,” is a 2D open-world adventure that starts small but allows you to build up as you go. Inmost, also coming soon, is a 2D platform adventure with three playable characters. CrossCode will honor the SNES 16-bit days with its fast-paced top-down adventure and exclusive Switch content when it launches this summer.
Both sources also wanted to remind us of some previously released indie greats along with three games that had surprise releases today. When Ski Lifts Go Wrong is a ski lift construction simulator with touch-screen controls and an auto-build feature. Goat Simulator: The GOATY features all the previously released DLC. Unruly Heroes focuses on four unlikely heroes in a colorful 3D side-scrolling platform adventure.
Below, you’ll find the highlight reel from Nintendo UK and the full list of games mentioned in both the video and press release, along with their release dates/windows.
