Nintendo Direct Recap – Feb. 13, 2019

The much rumored January 2019 edition of the Nintendo Direct never happened, even though many were hoping for it. Instead, we got a short video featuring indie titles and a few email press releases. So when it came to the rumors of a February Direct, many of us started wondering if this was a “Boy Who Cried Wolf” scenerio again. Fortunately, we were greated with an announcement yesterday that confirmed the video would go live on February 13. Let’s recap what was announced!

For those who missed out on watching the February 2019 Nintendo Direct, we have it embedded at the end of this article.

The presentation started off with something many of us have been waiting on for a while. Super Mario Maker 2 will launch on Nintendo Switch this June with even more features, tools, and items than the original Wii U and 3DS games.

After that, we saw more details on Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order, which is coming this summer.

BoxBoy! + BoxGirl! brings a two-player mode when it launches on April 26.

Next, they announced a big update to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will be arriving before April 2019. The version 3 update will include the Joker playable fighter and more. Also, you can get the Snake, Simon, Squirtle, Pokémon Trainer, and Ivysaur amiibo later this year.

Speaking of updates, Captain Toad will be getting a new two-player mode and 18 new courses. The co-op update will be available today, while the new courses are available for pre-purchase today. One of them will also be available for free today.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night will be coming to Switch this summer. This action adventure looks to bend the rules of 2D side-scrollers.

Turning their attention to Dragon Quest, we found out that Dragon Quest Builders 2 will hit the Switch on July 12, 2019. Right after that, they announced that Dragon Quest XI S Echoes of an Elusive Age Definitive Edition will not only be in the running for the longest game title of 2019, but it is also set to launch exclusively on Switch later this fall.

Disney Tsum Tsum Festival was shown off and is set to arrive on Switch this year.

Fans of Starlink: Battle for Atlas can rejoice, as we have new Star Fox-related content coming in an April update. This will involve new missions and also let you control more of the Star Fox team: Peppy, Falco, and Slippy.

Rune Factory 4 Special is set to arrive exclusively on the Switch later this year. Also, they announced that Rune Factory 5 is officially in development. Although, we have no further information about it right now.

This Nintendo Direct contained a few new properties, and one of them came from Square. Their new RPG, Onikaki, has you rescuing and powering up from lost souls. This single-player adventure will be available later this summer.

Yoshi’s Crafted World was also shown off again, as its release date is imminent. As you wait, though, you can download the free demo off the Switch eShop when it launches today.

Before the headlines of quick hits continued, Nintendo spent some time on Fire Emblem: Three Houses, which has been pushed back to release on July 26. Apparently, they needed a bit more time to finish development, but they did share more about the story today. It takes place on the continent of Fódlan, which contains three territories. It seems much of your time will be spent leading one of the three houses within the monastery: Black Eagles, Blue Lions, and Golden Deer.

Next came something none of us expected. If you’ve ever wanted to go against 99 other players in a Tetris battle-royal, today is your day, because Tetris 99 is coming to Switch for free today. Just make sure you have Nintendo Online account to play.

Dead by Daylight is a survival game that allows you to play as the victim or the killer. You can grab it for your Switch this fall.

Honestly, I don’t even know how to explain the next game, but Deltarune: Chapter 1 will be available for free on Switch at the end of February from the creator of Untertale. I think it involves a lot of dogs, but I’m not quite sure.

As you wait for Daemon X Machina to launch this summer, you can download a free demo of the game today. They’ll also be asking for feedback from those who play the demo, so that’s a great way to help development. I hope more game developers and publisher do this on Switch, as it happens quite often on other systems.

Grid Autosport is raising the stakes for racing on Switch this summer with all the previously released DLC along with local and online multiplayer.

Before they wrapped up, they showed off more new IP. This time, it was from Platinum Games, who are known for Bayonetta franchise. Astral Chain is an action adventure, where you take the role of a special police force unit. You’ll work together with others to help this futuristic city. While not much was explained, it does look really intersting.

Finally, as the presentation closed out, we got to see an HD remake of the Game Boy classic, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. The graphics have a cutesy-toy-like appearance, but don’t let that fool you, as it looks quite amazing. If you haven’t played the original or if you’re looking to experience it again, you’ll be able to when it launches on Switch later this year.
