It looks like Nintendo is increasing their Nintendo Switch production to 30 million units this fiscal year and might be preparing for 4K gaming.
As reported by Bloomberg, Nintendo Co., Ltd. has asked their assembly partners to increase Switch production from 25 to 30 million this fiscal year. This is not the first instance this year, as Bloomberg also reported that back in early August, Nintendo asked their partners to increase Switch production from 22 to 25 million. This increase in production is due to the astronomical success of Animal Crossing: New Horizons selling 22 million units as of June 30, 2020 and the pandemic increasing demand for gaming hardware. Nintendo’s financial losses this year seem to be from not being able to keep up with producing enough hardware since supply chains were on lockdown earlier this year. The House of Mario must be confident in their assembly lines if they are increasing their production goal again, despite Switch hardware still being hard to find at retailers.
This Bloomberg report also claims that Nintendo has been asking third-party developers to make their games “4K-ready.” These developers have remained anonymous. It’s possible that the production increase is to make way for the supposed new, upgraded Switch model releasing early next year and starting production later this year. Nintendo has declined to comment.
With the announcements of Super Mario 3D All-Stars and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, Nintendo Switch will certainly be in demand this year.
Dave’s first Nintendo platform was the GameCube when he was age 7; however, he was introduced to Nintendo through Duck Hunt on NES.
